Women have never been busier or felt more overwhelmed by juggling the multiple roles and numerous responsibilities we manage. We’ve never had more on our figurative plates than we do today and the mental health statistics are reflective of the social, emotional, relational and professional weight we are carrying. According to the Office on Women’s Health, More than 1 in 5 women in the United States experienced a mental health condition in the past year, such as depression or anxiety. And, anxiety in women is 60 percent more common than in men.
Here are a few of the most common challenges impacting women’s mental health:
- Life changes – new job/job loss, recent move, marriage, divorce/separation
- Grief & loss
- Relationship difficulties
Aside from these common women’s issues, it is also important to recognize the amazing uniqueness of our makeup, including our mental health. Women’s mental health is impacted by our hormones throughout our lifespan, particularly during times of fluctuation – throughout our cycle, during pregnancy, postpartum and menopause. Some of us are especially sensitive to the hormonal shifts we experience throughout our cycle and these hormonal shifts may impact our mood.
